Genre: Murder mystery

Synopsis: Cora is your average American woman, married with a young child, a good job in the family business, a beautiful home. But one day, while at the beach with her family, she commits murder right in front of the eyes of everyone there. The most disturbing part? She claims she’s never even met the man she has so brutally murdered.

This was a very interesting read, but I’ll keep this review brief in order to avoid any sort of spoilers, given the genre.

One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was the plot. There were many twists and turns and I really appreciated the chaos of it. I think it reflected the chaos of what was going through the main character’s mind throughout the novel. It goes back and forth between present and past, and sometimes can be hard to follow. This usually turns me off from a book, but this one seemed to suit it! It felt very intentional and I think it added to the character development and the story. It really drew me in and made me think. This murder mystery is one of the better plots I have read, no lying!

Cora is a very dark and twisted character who lies at every turn during the investigation. But is she lying, or does she really not remember? Dun dun dun…. One of the best parts of the book is trying to figure out if she really knew this man that she murdered or if he was a complete stranger.

The one thing that made me lower my rating for this book is that I had a difficult time at certain points understanding it because of the translation. The original book is written in German and has been translated into English for the readers. Some of the words were not changed into the English version, which I found confusing.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and think it’s a great read! Murder mysteries can be hit or miss for me, but this one really held up.

I will give a warning – there is disturbing sexual content in this book. So, if you are not okay with that, please don’t read it.

  1. Have you read (or watched) Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood? It sounds like maybe similar themes: is the murderess crazy or super conniving?
