Synopsis: Tessa Gray has travelled to London to be with her brother after her aunt passes away. Upon arrival, she is kidnapped by the Dark Sisters and forced to face what she really is. She has the ability to transform into another person by just touching an item of theirs, and the Magister is looking to use and abuse her power for his gain. After being rescued by the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, she is thrown into a world she didn’t even know existed, filled with vampires, werewolves, warlocks… Tessa soon will have to fight to get her brother back from the Magister with the help of her new friends.

Where do I even begin?

Tessa is my favorite book character, ever. I know that’s a big thing to say but I have read and reread this series many times and I still feel the same way. She is a queen. My favorite thing about her is the fact that she has so much sass, kind of like myself. Her attitude in that day and age wasn’t very acceptable which makes me love her even more. She did not care about acting the way society dictated she should and spoke true to her heart. Her emotional strength throughout the books is admirable and when she loves people, she puts them before herself and will do anything to keep them safe.

The other characters in this book, Will and Jem specifically, are also very well developed and lovable. I really enjoyed reading their stories and can’t say enough good things about the characters the author created for this branch of the series.

The plot of the prequel series is seriously fantastic. There is such a deep storyline and I love seeing some of the characters from the modern day series also pop up and making connections between bloodlines.

In general, I love the Shadowhunter universe. Cassandra Clare is a genius. The world she has created is unlike any other that I have ever read, and I appreciate how much time and effort she has put into making this entire history for the series. I find her plot twists to be so intriguing and I honestly never saw most of them coming, and it’s tough to surprise me!

One thing I would say about this series and universe, is to read the books in the order they were released! I think it’s so important to the plots and storylines to keep to the author’s vision. This is one of my most highly recommended books, whether you usually read fantasy or not. I can guarantee you will enjoy the series no matter what age.

  1. My favourite Tessa moment was when she rescued her darn self from the carriage when the Dark Sister kidnapped her (again.) No waiting for Will or Jem to come save her, she just did what needed doing and threw herself out the door. I cheered outloud at that point!
